The Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the body, and its functions include temperature regulation, the manufacturing of vitamin D as well as protecting the body beneath.
The skin is divided into three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer. The appearance of the skin is conditioned by how quickly the dead surface cells are replaced by new cells from the dermis. When dead skin cells collect on the surface of the skin, the complexion appears lifeless and dull. Cleansing the skin removes dirt from the surface and dirt trapped in the pores;  it also removes dead skin cells. As we age the natural process of cell renewal slows down, and the youthful elasticity of the skin diminishes. Aromatherapy skin products stimulate rapid regeneration of cells in the dermis to help retain a beautiful complexion as we age.

Skin types:
Skin may change according to age, health, environment, diet and lifestyle.

Normal skin:
Normal skin is rare beyond puberty, and other than in children, not really common at all. Normal skin has good muscle tone, it’s well hydrated it has good circulation, it’s soft and supple, it’s free from blemishes, it has a fine texture with no enlarged pores or wrinkles.

Oily and combination skin:
Oily skin has a shiny look and it feels oily to the touch; it also has enlarged pores and sometimes a thick, coarse appearance. Oily skin may also be characterized by acne, blackheads, spots and blemishes.
Combination skin is the most common; with the oily T-zone of the forehead, nose and chin with dry skin on the rest of the face.

Dry and sensitive:
Dry skin is caused by insufficient production of sebum, the skin’s natural moisturizer; and it’s often dehydrated. The lack of sebum diminishes the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Dry skin looks delicate, fine and thin, with small pores. It’s affected by the sun as well as the wind and it wrinkles easily.
Sensitive skin is usually fair and delicate; it reddens and itches. It’s also prone to allergic reactions caused by the chemicals in commercial cosmetics. Gentle plant-based natural cosmetics are recommended for dry and sensitive skin types.

Mature skin:
Mature skin is characterized by  crow’s-feet, spider veins, age spots, wrinkles and  loss of elasticity; the bone structure underneath looks more noticeable and  the skin also looses its natural glow. Aging is a normal part of life and with proper skin care, mature skin can look and feel good.

Cosmetic Aromatherapy:
Essential oils have been used for cosmetic purposes for centuries, mostly by the Egyptians, who used frankincense in embalming procedures. In ancient times, aromatic plants were used to honor the divine. Essential oils in skin care help to rejuvenate and beautify the face and body. However, beauty is more than skin deep, because what you eat and drink, how you cleanse your skin and your health are all reflected in your face.
